Effects of residual stresses on fatigue crack propagation of an orthotropic steel bridge deck

چکیده
Orthotropic steel decks (OSD's) are susceptible to fatigue failure due cyclic loading. Often cracks found in the joint between deck plate and trough. Due welding process, residual stresses present around joint. In this paper, effect of on crack propagation rate has been evaluated. First, a FE model made predict validate stress field OSD welding. The validation is comparing measured data at surface over thickness flange. used subsequently for analysis based extended finite element method (XFEM). simulation including shows good correlation compared experimental data, while without less correlation. effects relatively large as tensile transversal increase propagation, longitudinal decrease rate. optimal modelling component investigated.

Influence of Residual Stress Field on the Fatigue Crack Propagation in Prestressing Steel Wires
This paper deals with the effect of several residual stress profiles on the fatigue crack propagation in prestressing steel wires subjected to tension loading or bending moment. To this end, a computer program was developed to evaluate the crack front evolution on the basis of the Walker law. Results demonstrate that the absence of residual stresses makes the crack propagate towards a preferent...
متن کاملSteel Bridge Fatigue Crack Detection with Piezoelectric Wafer Active Sensors
Piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS) are well known for its dual capabilities in structural health monitoring, acting as either actuators or sensors. Due to the variety of deterioration sources and locations of bridge defects, there is currently no single method that can detect and address the potential sources globally. In our research, our use of the PWAS based sensing has the novelty of...
متن کاملFatigue Reliability Assessment of Orthotropic Steel Bridge Decks Based on Probabilistic Multi-scale Finite Element Analysis
The orthotropic steel deck (OSD) has been utilized successfully for thousands of bridges worldwide; however, fatigue cracking of the OSD has been observed frequently due to the complicated welded details combined with stresses that can be difficult to quantify, and the uncertainties in fatigue damage accumulation. In this paper, a fatigue reliability assessment method is proposed based on a com...
متن کاملNeutron diffraction investigations on residual stresses contributing to the fatigue crack growth in ferritic steel tubular bridges
Fatigue crack growth observed in tubular K-joint specimens, typical of tubular bridge structures, always initiates at the chord crown toe locations whether the applied stress range is tensile or compressive. Even though other locations around the weld have highest hot-spot stresses, chord crown toe locations are still the most critical. This raises the question about the relevant tensile residu...
متن کاملState-of-art of Asphalt surfacings on long-spanned orthotropic steel deck in China
Reliable and durable asphalt surfacing systems still remain to be desired for the long-spanned orthotropic steel bridges as the nationally and internationally reports on distresses in deck pavement. Based on ten-year research works, this paper has presented a brief review and discussion of the Chinese practices and experiences of deck pavement on long-spanned steel bridges, including issues of ...
